How we review

Renter Upgrades reviews are research-led, not sponsored placements. Every pick, rating and verdict comes from the same repeatable process, so you can weigh our advice knowing exactly how it was formed.

We are a research-driven publication. Where we have not physically tested a product, we say so plainly. Our value is in synthesising manufacturer specifications, verified owner feedback and independent reviews into clear, UK-specific recommendations - not in pretending to a test flat we do not run. How we choose what to recommend

1. Renter-friendly first. This site is about upgrading a rented home you don't own, so we weight kit toward no-drill, non-permanent, easy-to-remove options that won't cost you your deposit, and we flag anything that needs a landlord's permission.
2. UK-buyable first. A product only earns a place if a UK reader can actually buy it today from a reputable retailer. We build each shortlist from the real UK market, not generic global product knowledge.
3. Category-appropriate criteria. Each category is judged on what matters for it: a smart plug on app and reliability, a security camera on privacy and no-drill mounting, an air purifier on room size and noise, no-drill fixings on how much they hold and how cleanly they come off.
4. Honest trade-offs. Every recommendation states what you give up. No product is perfect, and a review that hides the compromises is not useful.

What our ratings mean

Ratings summarise how well a product delivers for its intended use in a rented home, weighing performance, renter-friendliness, build, ease of use and value. A high score is not "buy this over everything" - it means the product does its job well for the people and homes it is aimed at. The "best for" and "skip if" notes on each review matter as much as the number.

Independence

We are not paid to feature or rank any product. Some links are affiliate links, meaning we may earn a commission if you buy through them at no extra cost to you. That never changes which products we recommend or how we rank them. Prices are pulled live from retailers rather than typed into guides, so a rating is never swayed by a stale price.
