The SwitchBot Bot solves a problem no smart switch can touch in a rented home: when you are not allowed to change the switch itself, it changes who presses it. The device is a small 43 mm box with a motorised arm inside. You stick it beside a button or switch with the supplied adhesive pad, and the app can then press that button on a schedule, on a timer or on demand, with no wiring and nothing that needs a landlord's sign-off.
It is more versatile than it first looks. For rocker light switches, an included pull attachment lets the arm both push on and pull off, covering both actions, and it has enough force for everything from light switches to coffee-machine and boiler buttons. Independent testing found the little mechanism dependable over extended use, which matters for something you rely on daily.
The main compromise is that on its own the Bot works over Bluetooth only, so for scheduling from anywhere, voice control or integration with the rest of your smart home you need to add the separate SwitchBot Hub. Homeowners who can simply fit a smart switch will get a tidier result, but for a renter who cannot touch the wiring, the Bot is the definitive answer, just budget for the hub if you want more than local control.
