SwitchBot Bot Review: Automate a Switch, No Wiring

SwitchBot Bot verdict: the zero-wiring way to automate a switch you are not allowed to change, ideal for renters if you add the hub for remote control.

4.0 / 5
Highly recommended

The definitive zero-wiring way to automate a switch you are not allowed to change - just budget for the SwitchBot Hub if you want voice or remote control.

  • Renter friendliness 5.0
  • Reliability 4.3
  • Features out of the box 3.3
  • Design 3.0

Strengths

  • Automates existing light switches, boilers, intercoms and appliance buttons with no electrical work at all
  • Sticks on in seconds with a 3M pad and peels off when you move out
  • Works with almost any button or rocker switch, with configurable press-and-hold in the app

Watch outs

  • Bluetooth-only out of the box - remote access and Alexa/Google/Siri control need a separate SwitchBot Hub
  • Utilitarian looks; a small box stuck on the wall is not to everyone's taste
  • Its body can partially block finger access to the switch it is mounted on
  • Installation 3M adhesive pad - nothing drilled or wired
  • Voice / remote control Requires a separate SwitchBot Hub
  • Best for Automating switches and buttons a tenant cannot legally rewire

The SwitchBot Bot solves a problem no smart switch can touch in a rented home: when you are not allowed to change the switch itself, it changes who presses it. The device is a small 43 mm box with a motorised arm inside. You stick it beside a button or switch with the supplied adhesive pad, and the app can then press that button on a schedule, on a timer or on demand, with no wiring and nothing that needs a landlord's sign-off.

It is more versatile than it first looks. For rocker light switches, an included pull attachment lets the arm both push on and pull off, covering both actions, and it has enough force for everything from light switches to coffee-machine and boiler buttons. Independent testing found the little mechanism dependable over extended use, which matters for something you rely on daily.

The main compromise is that on its own the Bot works over Bluetooth only, so for scheduling from anywhere, voice control or integration with the rest of your smart home you need to add the separate SwitchBot Hub. Homeowners who can simply fit a smart switch will get a tidier result, but for a renter who cannot touch the wiring, the Bot is the definitive answer, just budget for the hub if you want more than local control.

Q01Do I need a hub to use the SwitchBot Bot?
Not for basics - within Bluetooth range the app can press, schedule and time it. A SwitchBot Hub is required for out-of-home control and for Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri; Apple Home support comes via Matter with the Hub 2.
Q02Can it turn a UK rocker light switch both on and off?
Yes. In switch mode an included stick-on attachment lets the arm pull the rocker back as well as press it.
Q03Will it damage the wall or switch when I move out?
It attaches with a 3M adhesive pad rather than screws, so it peels away and the switch underneath is never modified.
Q04How long does the battery last?
SwitchBot quotes up to 600 days of typical usage from the replaceable battery.
