The Tapo C120 is arguably the best value in budget smart cameras right now. TP-Link has loaded it with features that usually cost far more, including 2K video, colour night vision and AI object detection, and, crucially, refuses to charge a monthly fee to use them. For a renter watching the pennies, a capable camera with no subscription is exactly the right shape of product.
The magnetic base is what makes it a genuine renter pick. It sticks instantly to a fridge, a radiator or a metal door frame, so you can position it without screws and move it whenever you like, leaving nothing behind. Recording to a microSD card or to Tapo's optional local hub keeps your footage yours and off a paid cloud plan.
Its only real weakness is middling audio quality, which is easy to forgive at this price. Note that it is an indoor camera with a USB plug rather than a weatherproof outdoor unit, and it is not the choice for anyone deeply invested in Apple HomeKit. For everyone else, it embarrasses far pricier rivals.
