Balcony solar has quietly become one of the most popular ways to generate your own power in Germany, and it is finally arriving in the UK. For flat-dwellers and renters it is the obvious answer to a question rooftop solar cannot: how do you get solar when you do not own the roof? Here is how a balcony panel works, and the rules - including one fire-safety catch - you need to know first. The framework comes from the government's plug-in solar consultation.

How do balcony solar panels work?

A balcony solar kit is a small solar panel, a microinverter and a plug on a lead. The panel produces direct current; the microinverter converts it to the 230V mains-matched alternating current your home uses; and the plug feeds that power into your flat through a normal socket. From there it behaves like any other electricity on the circuit - your fridge, router and other daytime loads use it first, so you draw less from the grid.

UK kits are capped at 800W of AC output, measured at the microinverter, which is plenty to shave a meaningful slice off a flat's daytime electricity use.

Is balcony solar allowed in the UK?

Yes, from 27 August 2026, when the law (SI 2026/848) creating a legal route for plug-in solar comes into force. From that date a certified kit of up to 800W can connect through a standard plug. The key word is certified: only kits that meet the government's product specification and are listed on the official register qualify, so a random imported panel does not automatically count.

Because a balcony system is temporary and reversible, it generally falls within permitted development rights, meaning it does not need planning permission in most homes - with the usual exceptions for listed buildings and conservation areas.

The balcony rule that catches people out: fire safety

This is the one to check before you get excited. For fire-safety reasons, the rules do not allow a plug-in kit to be installed on certain surfaces: aluminium composite (ACM) or metal composite (MCM) cladding, high-pressure laminate cladding, timber cladding, or timber balconies. If your balcony itself is timber, or your building has one of those cladding types where the panel would sit, balcony mounting may not be permitted, and you would need to look at an alternative spot - a window, a wall on a compliant surface, or a freestanding stand.

It is an easy detail to miss and a genuinely important one, so identify what your balcony and the adjacent wall are made of early.

Do you need permission?

There are two separate permissions. Planning permission is rarely needed, as covered above. The permission that matters more for most flat-dwellers is your landlord's or, for leaseholders, the freeholder's - most tenancy agreements and leases cover alterations, even reversible ones. How do you mount it safely on a balcony?

Assuming your balcony is a compliant surface, mount the panel with no-drill fixings - railing clamps or a weighted frame - and secure it firmly against wind, which is the main hazard on a high balcony.
