Plug-In Solar Panels for UK Renters: 2026 Rules Explained

Plug-in 'balcony' solar becomes legal in the UK from 27 August 2026, capped at 800W. What renters need to know - and why not to buy a kit just yet.

For years, the frustrating thing about solar for renters has been that all the obvious options were off the table. You cannot bolt panels to a roof you do not own, and you certainly cannot pay an electrician to wire an inverter into a flat you might move out of next year. Plug-in solar changes that maths. It is a genuinely portable, take-it-with-you upgrade: a panel or two, a small inverter, and a normal plug. This guide explains what it is, what the new UK rules say, and - just as importantly - why the smart thing right now is to understand it rather than rush to buy.

What exactly is plug-in (balcony) solar?

Plug-in solar is a self-contained kit, usually one or two lightweight panels connected to a small micro-inverter. The panel produces direct current, the micro-inverter converts it to mains-style alternating current, and a normal cable ends in a standard UK three-pin plug. You hang the panel on a balcony railing, prop it on a flat roof, or stand it on a patio, and plug it in. It has been popular for years in Germany, where these setups are nicknamed Balkonkraftwerk (balcony power plant) and number in the millions.

The appeal for renters is that nothing is fixed or fitted. There is no drilling, no rewiring, and no consumer-unit work. When you move, you unplug it, fold it up, and take it with you - which is exactly why it fits the deposit-safe, no-install approach the rest of this site is built around.

Not yet, but a fixed date is now set. Connecting a plug-in solar device to a normal socket becomes legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026. The change is made by SI 2026/848, the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 and ESQCR 2002 (Amendment) Regulations 2026, which was made on 16 July 2026 and comes into force on that August date.

Before this, plugging any generation source into a domestic socket sat in a legal grey area at best, because a standard plug was never designed to feed power back into a circuit. The new rules carve out a narrow, tightly specified exception for small, certified plug-in solar kits. The key word is narrow: the exception only covers devices that meet the government's specification, and only from the day the regulations start. A kit bought and plugged in today does not become legal just because it might comply on paper.

How does a plug-and-play solar kit actually work?

The chain is simple. Sunlight hits the panel and generates DC electricity. The micro-inverter, usually bolted to the back of the panel, converts that to 230V AC that is synchronised with the mains. When you plug the kit in, that power flows into your flat's ring circuit and is used first by whatever is switched on at the time - the fridge, the router, a laptop charger. You are not storing it or selling it; you are simply offsetting some of the electricity you would otherwise draw from the grid at that moment.

This 'self-consumption first' behaviour is why the savings depend so heavily on your daytime usage, and why the honest numbers further down this page are more modest than the headline figures in some adverts. Anything the panel makes that you are not using at that instant is effectively given away, because a plug-in device has no export metering.

What are the rules: the 800W cap and what counts as a compliant kit?

The headline limit is 800 watts of AC output, measured at the micro-inverter (the specification also expresses this as 800VA of apparent power, with a maximum current of 3.5A). That is the ceiling on what the kit can push into your socket, and it is one device per household on a single final circuit. The solar panels themselves can be rated higher in DC terms - up to 2,000W - though the specification advises a professional check above roughly 960W of panels, since more panel than inverter is a normal design choice for cloudy British light.

Compliance is stricter than a lot of the marketing suggests, and it splits in two. First, the plug must be a properly approved BS 1363 moulded plug with a low-rated fuse - this is the part that a notified body signs off, and it is the actual safety carve-out in the regulations. Second, the whole kit is covered by the government's Interim Product Specification. The kit is self-declared against that specification by the manufacturer rather than certified by an independent lab, but self-declaration is not the same as a free-for-all: a compliant product needs a declaration of conformity, a ten-year technical file, grid type-testing to engineering standard G98, correct labelling, and - crucially - it must be listed on the Energy Networks Association G98 Type Test Register before it can legally be sold. In practice, that register is the thing to check: if a kit is not on it, it is not a compliant plug-in solar device, whatever the product page claims.

Do I have to tell my network operator? (G98 explained)

Yes. Even a small plug-in kit is not exempt from grid rules. It falls under Engineering Recommendation G98, the standard for connecting small generation to the network. The good news for renters is that G98 for this size of device is a 'connect and notify' arrangement, not a permission you have to wait for: you install it and then tell your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) using a short notification form. The government specifically considered dropping this step and decided to keep it, so treat the notification as part of doing it properly, not an optional extra. The device itself also has to be G98 type-tested, which loops back to that register listing.

Do renters need the landlord's permission?

Because a plug-in kit involves no fixing, no wiring and no alteration to the property, it sits much closer to 'an appliance you plug in' than to 'building work'. That is the whole point of the format. Even so, a large panel hung on a balcony or fixed to an exterior railing can raise questions about the building's appearance, safety and, for flats, communal or leasehold rules - so a quick written check with your landlord or letting agent before installing is the sensible, tenancy-protecting move. How much could an 800W kit really save you?

This is where honesty matters, because the retailer figures and the government's own modelling do not agree. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero's impact assessment for these regulations estimates that a typical 800W kit angled at 30 degrees facing south generates around 690 kWh a year, of which roughly 62% is used in the home - worth in the region of £110 a year at current prices. Mounted vertically on an east or west-facing balcony, output drops to around 378 kWh a year (though a higher share, about 72%, is self-consumed), landing closer to £70 a year.

Those numbers are noticeably lower than the £175 to £210 you sometimes see quoted by sellers, mostly because real balconies are rarely pointed due south at the perfect angle, and because you cannot use every watt the moment it is made. Is it safe to plug solar into a normal socket?

Safety is the entire reason the rules are as specific as they are. The historic worry with plugging in a generator is a fused plug or socket being asked to carry current in an unusual direction, and the risk of a live pin if a plug is pulled while the panel is still producing. The 2026 regime addresses this directly: the approved plug design, the low fuse rating, the micro-inverter's built-in anti-islanding (it shuts off within a fraction of a second if the mains disappears), and the G98 type-testing all exist to make a compliant, register-listed kit safe to use as intended. The corollary is the important bit for buyers: those protections only apply to a properly compliant kit. A cheap import that skips the approved plug or the register listing skips the safety case with it.
